The Electronic Quilt Project

Creating a electronic quilt is a great opportunity to combine traditional sewing with textiles, then adding electronics to create a unique work of art. You need to be creative in combining fabric textures and colors with a good understanding of how electric current flows in small areas. There are many ways to find out about electrical current in small fun projects. Your imagination can help you to design anything using fabric and new electronics. Would you like a button on your shirt to light up when you wanted it to? Maybe put small lights on your backpack in a design so people can see you at night walking. Create your own ideas and see if you like electronics as a accessory on your clothes, blankets, backpack or come up with your own design.

Activity# 1 Think of an interesting design for a project.
The design should be a simple shape with 2 -3 elements. Think about a flower with a bee or a fish ready to eat a fly. Maybe you like a familiar character or a basic shape like a triangle. When you decide to create a design keep in mind where you will put this design, on a square of fabric, a t-shirt or on a backpack. The material you choose will make a difference when the sewing begins. We will discuss this later in the blog.

Activity# 2 Rough sketches
In your drawing rough sketches of your design should be simple.
Keep the design simple, what do you have interest in? Does your sketch reflect your personality? Once you have everything down, proceed to draw your design, based on the sketch you did in the last step. Scan the rough sketches to the computer .

Activities 4 Coloring Your Rough sketches

  • Open Photoshop to color your pencil sketch
  • Follow these easy steps to color your pencil sketch
  1. Open your image in Photoshop
  2. Make a new layer, select the brush tool, pick a color and set the blend mode of the layer to 'Multiply'
  3. Start painting one thing that's going to be in the same color, for example: face, hair or the shirt.
  4. When you're done with that, make a new layer and colorize another thing.
  5. The image looks boring because there are no effects on it. We are now going to use the two tools: 'Color Dodge' and 'Burn Tool'. Note that Color Dodge' makes a color lighter and that 'Burn Tool' make a color dark
  6. Click on the 'Burn Tool' and select a pretty big brush size for example 100. Start painting the image darker on the left side of the image. You should do this on all the layers you have
  7. Do the same things with the 'Color Dodge'-tool, but now make it lighter.
  8. Click on the eraser tool to erase some of things you don’t want.
